The transition from Stop & Shop to Tops Market will take place towards the end of this month, and should only result in one full day of closure. That’s according to Stop & Shop’s assistant manager Steven Bongiardina, who said that on Tuesday, August 23 Stop & Shop would finish its last day under that name by closing earlier than normal, at 6 p.m. The following day will presumably be a mad dash through the aisles, replacing all the store-branded merchandise and updating fixtures and signage to reflect the new ownership. Bongiardina said he wasn’t certain what time on Thursday, August 25 Tops would open, as he has yet to be advised.
After the merger of Royal Ahold and the Delhaize Group, corporate owners of Stop & Shop and Hannaford, was announced, the New Paltz store and other supermarkets in the region had to be sold to satisfy antitrust concerns. According to Bongiardina, all the people presently employed at the Stop & Shop in New Paltz Plaza will be keeping their jobs when the new company takes over the store.
