Capt. Jack Rose, the 19-year-old Mount Marion firefighter who died from injuries suffered in a Dec. 19 house fire, was honored by the Saugerties Youth Hockey Association at a ceremony at the Kiwanis Ice Rink Dec. 29.
Fire chiefs and firefighters from the various Saugerties fire companies along with several of Rose’s family members took part in the solemn ceremony that raised a large banner honoring the young man.
Before he became interested in firefighting, Rose played ice hockey.
“He (Rose) joined in 2004 when he was eight years old,” said Pat Caffrey, one of the leaders of the hockey association, “and he played for four seasons until 2007 when firefighting caught his interest.”
Caffrey said the association was honoring Rose for his commitment to the community of Saugerties.
“Our league wouldn’t be able to survive without the community and volunteers,” Caffrey said, “and Jack was emblematic of everything that is in Saugerties. So we wanted to recognize his impact on Saugerties and are raising this banner with his firefighter number.”
