Minew has what it takes
This election, as in all elections past, candidates are working hard for your vote this November. You see the signs alongside the road and on lawns of concerned citizens. Educating the electorate on a candidate’s issue is one of the hardest things they can do to gain your vote. I believe there are several qualities to look for in a candidate who will potentially represent you on the Ulster County Legislature as your legislator. Certainly experience is one of them, along with integrity, honesty and a deep desire to make our community a better place to live and raise a family. I believe Angie Minew holds these qualities.
Experience: Angie is a current School Board member on the Saugerties School Board. Her willingness to serve unselfishly to ensure the children of Saugerties get a quality education while watching out for the taxpayer proves her ability to govern in an environment where taking a stance for the people is not always popular. Angie Minew is a fighter, for the taxpayer and the children.
Honesty: another quality we look for in a candidate. Angie Minew’s resolve to do what’s right for the residents of Saugerties is shown in her ability to cut through the political rhetoric and get down to business, by knowing what affects Saugerties, either good or bad, and taking a stance to correct the wrongs and applaud the good. Angie Minew is a successful business owner in the community and as such she understands the needs of Saugerties businesses and it is at the forefront of her desire to make the community better. I have never seen Angie Minew back down from unpopular issues just to protect her standing. If something is not right, then it’s not right and in her belief and she begins to work on a solution. That makes a good public servant? Tenacious personality? A fighter, honesty and a sincere desire to do what’s right for the residents in District 2? I think so.
Besides serving on two school boards, Saugerties and Ulster County Boces, she is a mother of four children, a devoted wife and business owner who spends her time fighting for the people of Saugerties. I couldn’t think of another working candidate for the Ulster County Legislature than Angie Minew. I’ve served on the County Legislature for six years and what we need on the Legislature in a hardworking, fearless public servant who puts the best interests of the people of Saugerties first and foremost. I’ve seen what Angie Minew can do and I believe once you look past the misinformation put out there by her opponent, you too will see that Angie Minew is the only candidate who will work tirelessly for you, the residents of District 2.

Failure to communicate
Once again there seems to be a mental block in village government when it comes to logic. Someone in village government announced that Clovelea had a new owner months ago. There was an interview. That level of communication with the village was all in the paper. Now we hear that there wasn’t communication from the village and the work he is doing is being stopped by an order.
What’s wrong with this picture? The new owner states his intentions to the village and there is no communication of the process he must go through? It is a total dereliction of duty to know that someone intends to do something and not give them the way to do it legally. It’s what our taxes go for — making sure what is known by the “club” does not become a gotcha for an unsuspecting person with the best of intentions. Who trains these people anyway?

Barbaria will get the job done
Allyson Barbaria has been an influential part of my life for over 27 years. She pulls no punches. I know I speak for many when I say I admire her strength and her integrity. She always encourages everyone around her to reach for the stars.
She is the voice to get the job done. She is more than just a hard working mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, she is that one someone I have looked up to for most of my life. She is someone you can always count on. Allyson leads by example, always giving 110 percent of herself no matter what the task at hand.
Allyson can hold down “the fort,” I admire that. She is mindful, and an outstanding multitasker. Nothing is out of reach to Allyson. I am forever grateful for her honestly, loyalty and the example she has set for all women in this community.
I encourage you to vote for someone who is not afraid to stand up and be heard, someone who will represent our struggles in today’s society. Now is the time Saugerties, Allyson is our chance, take it!

Lucky to have Leeanne
Leeanne Thornton has worked tirelessly and effectively to make the rewards of living in Saugerties great and to keep the costs of living here down. She gives her energetic support and leadership skills to every public event which make our town life a pleasure and to every project which benefits us. She promotes and participates in everything good in our economic and cultural life. We are so lucky to have her working for us. I urge everyone to vote in November to return Leeanne Thornton to the Town Board.

Keep up the good work
I wish to thank members of the Glasco Fire Department. Just like always the members including Ray Mayone Jr. gave their time this past week in having the Speckled Frog kids come and learn about fire safety.
We would also like to thank the Saugerties Police Department for having the children of Speckled Frog visit a few weeks ago. The children had an excellent tour.
As we continue to work in the unit of community helpers I would like to just thank openly both departments for their professionalism and dedication to the job. It’s a huge benefit for the children to see the men and woman who protect our community and interact with them. They are learning valuable lessons of trust and respect for those who sacrifice their lives to keep us safe. The children were provided with many hands-on experiences and cannot wait for another visit. Thank you everyone and keep up the good work.

Successful screening
I had the extreme joy of screening my film, “I Dream Too Much,” at the Woodstock Film Festival, particularly at the Orpheum Theater on October 2 and 4. A big thank you to Peter Lawrence of the Orpheum Theater; Inquiring Minds Bookstore, for hosting our party; Marjorie Block and Greg Helsmoortel of the Saugerties Tourism Board for sponsoring food; Partition Street Wine Shop; Mirabella’s; Brigid Walsh; and whoever brought the devilled eggs. Also, Will Dendis and David Gordon of the Times – y’all have been great supporters of the film from the beginning. The screenings at the Orpheum were truly one of the best experiences so far in the life of IDTM. Thank you all who attended. Let’s make more movies in Saugerties!
By the way, I don’t think it’s possible to dream too much.

Israel can remake itself
Susan Puretz is determined to keep Israel’s image pristine by smearing anyone who would call attention to facts like the recent slaughter of 547 Palestinian children in Gaza, or the nearly 65 years of illegal Israeli occupation.
These aren’t actions of a principled regime, but of an extremist theocracy determined to ethnically cleanse all Palestinians from land it claims God has given it two thousand years ago.
Fortunately, there are many Israelis who value international law and human rights over religious dogma. One such Israeli will be in Saugerties (Inquiring Mind Bookstore) on Saturday, Oct. 24, starting at 7 p.m. Author Noga Kadman will talk about her new book, “Erased from Space and Consciousness: Israel and the Depopulated Palestinian Villages of 1948.”
Israel doesn’t have to be an apartheid nation, an outcast in the world community. But things won’t change until the U.S. decides it doesn’t need a military colony in the Middle East. Not only is this colony incredibly expensive for America to maintain, but it destroys our image of a country committed to justice and human rights for all peoples of the world. Apartheid South Africa remade itself; so can Israel.
