Mayor William Murphy and Mary Olsen of the SAGE program presented plaques to Johan Perez, Eva Rothe, and Cameron Costello

Three youths were feted at the village of Saugerties’ trustees’ June 15 meeting with Saugerties Community Youth Awards.

The awards recognize young citizens of the Saugerties area who are caught making good choices and doing good deeds.

The program is run through the Saugerties is About Growth Experiences (SAGE) program.

Receiving awards were Cameron Costello, Eva Rothe and Johan Perez.

Costello and Rothe are members of Hope Antonelli’s Builders Club at the middle school. The girls explained the Builder’s Club is the middle school version of the high school’s Key Club, a service club.

Antonelli said of Costello that “she comes in like gangbusters.” She has helped organize and volunteered for every activity, while her friend Rothe was one of the top fundraisers for the Suzanne E. Filak Foundation.

The club also collects toys for Toys for Tots and runs a number of other service projects.

Perez was nominated by Robert Shaw and AnnChris Warren of the Boys and Girls Club.

They said the nine-year-old displays “exemplary leadership and kindness to other members of the club.”

He is a member of the club’s youth leadership program, Torch Club, which volunteers throughout the community. He is also a member of the club’s elementary basketball team.

For his work with the club, Perez was one of four members of the club to receive a full scholarship to attend Kamp Kiwanis this summer.
