Yes to rail trail
As I ride my bicycle along the treacherous road from Woodstock to Saugerties, I have often wished there were safer places to ride. After all , I have reached the age of 73 and realize that I am not as invulnerable as I thought I was when I was a teenager.
Now there’s an opportunity for just such a safe place to ride: 11.5 miles of rail corridor along the northern side of the Ashokan reservoir. NYC’s DEP has offered 2.5 million dollars as a start to Ulster County if the county agrees to create a multi-use rail trail there. Parking spaces, several points of entry, bathrooms, spectacular views with no permits required. NYC would keep the water in its reservoir pure and Ulster County would gain a world-class attraction.
But the County Legislature must authorize the county executive to act. It should do so while the offer stands.

You can prevent forest fires
With the recent dry weather which spurred a forest fire in Craigsmoor and the Shawangunk Valley, it is important to remember to exercise basic fire safety procedures when barbecuing or having a campfire when burn ban restrictions are not in place. Always quench and dose your fires out with water and make sure the fire is completely out. Never leave hot coals in a barbecue grill, as high winds can blow hot ash and coals onto dry ground which can start a forest fire. And around July 4, if legal fireworks are being used under the supervision of an adult, always remember to put the used fireworks into a sealed metal can, especially when the weather is dry. Let’s all help make this spring and summer season safe and uneventful for firefighters across Ulster County and New York State by practicing fire safety.

Thanks for supporting Legion baseball
As we begin our 2015 baseball season we would like to take a moment to thank those who have made it possible. Costs rise every year and it is through various fund-raising activities that we are able to garner the necessary money to keep our program strong. Individuals and businesses throughout the community are gracious in giving and we really appreciate the support. If you are reading this list and not on it but would like to join our contributors please feel free to do so by mailing a check made out to the American Legion to Jerry Malgieri, 19 Hemlock Lane, Saugerties, NY.
