Voters this fall will decide if the highway superintendent’s term should increase from two to four years.
The Town Board unanimously passed a resolution to pose the question to voters in the biennial town election this November.
This would be a better way to handle that office,” Deputy Supervisor Fred Costello said. “It gives the person time to learn the job.”
Voters in recent history made similar changes for the town justices and receiver of taxes.
“There is no plan to do this with the supervisor,” Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel said. The supervisor term is two years. Town Board seats are four years.
If the ballot proposition passes in November, it would take effect beginning with the next election, meaning the highway superintendent elected this fall would still have a two-year term.
