Wurts Street Bridge to close 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4

A historic bridge in downtown Kingston will get a badly needed facelift — and area drivers an unwelcome headache — in the coming months as work begins on the venerable span connecting Kingston and Port Ewen.

Work is expected to begin on the Wurts Street Bridge, which runs between Abeel Street in Kingston and Connelly Road in Port Ewen, at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4. The bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to last two months. One sidewalk over the bridge will remain open during the repairs.

State Department of Transportation officials said the $2.75 million project will include painting and pavement repairs. The money is part of an $8.3 million allocation for repairs on up to 21 bridges in the Hudson Valley region. DOT officials say a second phase of the project will begin next spring and include additional deck repair work and resurfacing.

During the bridge closure, traffic will be diverted to Route 9W via Spring Street and Garraghan Drive. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during peak traffic hours while the bridge is closed.
