The office of highway superintendent often goes uncontested. That’s certainly not the case this year, with two long-time Saugerties contractors battling fiercely for control of the department.
First-term incumbent Doug Myer, not enrolled in a party and endorsed by the Democrat and Conservative parties, is being challenged by Republican Ray Mayone, who carries the Republican, Independence and Saugerties United lines.
If you care about the condition of the roads in summer and winter, the management of the town’s largest department, and property taxes ( at $2.75 million, the department makes up 30% of the non-special-district town taxes), you care about this race.
