“My mom was so proud, she just cried and cried,” said this year’s Mum Queen, Olivia Bronson, prior to the Oct. 5 Mum Bowl. Her mother is Christa Bronson.
The naming of the Mum Queen and her court by their fellow high school seniors is a 45-year tradition in Saugerties. Voting takes place in mid-September. From a list of nominees, the first vote narrows the field down to six.
“When I found out that I was one of the six, I was just so surprised,” Siebeking said.
“I couldn’t believe it,” echoed Milosek.
The second vote decides the results, with the top vote-getter crowned the queen, and first two runners-up named to the court.
“When they announced our names at the Sept. 27 pep rally it was just such a surprise,” Bronson said.
They will reign over the Mum Festival at Seamon Park, Sunday, Oct. 13 which was canceled this past weekend because of inclement weather, and they will take part in next year’s July 4th Parade.
“I really looked up to last year’s Mum Queen, Hayley Spoljaric, this just means a lot to me,” Bronson added.
