The Town of Saugerties Conservative Party will hold a caucus Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Senior Center on Market St. to nominate Conservative candidates for town offices to be voted upon at the Nov. 5 election.
It’s an important nomination in Saugerties. In 2011, for example, the line delivered over 400 votes to incumbent Supervisor Kelly Myers, whose margin of victory was around 800.
This year, Myers will face a challenge from Gaetana Ciarlante. The highway superintendent race, which has been uncharacteristically exciting, will also play out at the caucus, with incumbent Dough Myer, who was a Republican until the party denied him the nomination in June, and Ray Mayone, the Republican nominee, both seeking the nomination. It is these two races where the Conservative nomination is likely to matter most, though all town races, including town board, town justice, receiver of taxes and town clerk, will be endorsed at the caucus. Anything can happen.
Several candidates and their supporters wrote to Saugerties Times last week. Here are their letters.
Myer seeks Conservative nomination
As I have stated in the past, candidates from all walks of life have the privilege to run for public office. I also maintain they need to possess the qualifications required to fulfill the duties of the office they are seeking.
Let’s slow down a minute and take a closer look at the letter my opponent presented in the Aug. 15 edition of Saugerties Times. Although his detailed confession is very noble, I bring your attention to his closing statement. Mr. Mayone states “What is relevant is whether I can run the Highway Department efficiently and save the taxpayers money.”
In 2012, as your Superintendent of Highways, I paid all bills and put $600,000-plus dollars into the Highway Department Fund Balance Account. The 2012-2013 FEMA budget of 3.5 million is currently 1.4 million below budget. Seems to me both departments are already running quite efficiently. Wouldn’t you agree?
Mr. Mayone has also publicly stated he will bring harmony back to the workforce. A majority of the men at the Highway Department stepped forward this year, expressing their desire to have me manage them again for a second term. This resulted in my endorsement for re-election by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union Local 445. Seems like harmony already exists. Wouldn’t you agree with that also?
Being your incumbent, I kindly request of all registered Conservative members, please attend your very important caucus being held at the Senior Citizens building, on August 28th at 7:30 pm and cast your ballot for Douglas Myer. This is your chance to support proven leadership and become part of my statement: “Together we can make a difference.”

Supporting Mayone at Conservative Caucus
To my fellow Conservatives: We are looking for someone to take over the Highway Department in the town of Saugerties this year. This individual is mature enough to have values and good common sense. He is a man with road-building experience, years of construction experience, excellent people skills and will have a sharp eye looking out for our taxes. I am supporting Ray Mayone for town of Saugerties highway superintendent. I encourage you to come out and vote at our Conservative Caucus being held on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Saugerties Senior Center at 7:30 p.m.

Mayone has talents and knowledge
I wish to respectfully ask you to support Ray Mayone at the Conservative Caucus which is being held on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saugerties Senior Center. I have known Ray Mayone for a very long time and have great respect for him. Raymond is a man who will be sincere to our town. He has owned and operated his own successful construction business for over 30 years. I know our town would benefit greatly from his many talents and knowledge. He will be dedicated and will work hard for us, the taxpayers. I know my late husband, Roger, is smiling down upon Raymond wishing him well. Therefore, please support Ray Mayone for town of Saugerties highway superintendent. Thank You,
