Slow Family Living author Bernadette Noll comes to Esopus Library
I have heard so much buzz about this event that I just had to share it with you. On Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m., the Town of Esopus Library presents author Bernadette Noll, author of Slow Family Living: 75 Simple Ways to Slow Down, Connect and Create More Joy!
“Slow isn’t about doing nothing; rather it’s about pausing long enough to ask, ‘Is this working for us?’ Come gather ideas and inspirations that will help you live the family life you truly want, in order to create the joy and connection you desire – now and for the long haul.”
It reminds me of a meme I saw on Facebook: “Stop the glorification of busy.” If you’re looking to make a change in this direction, this evening seems like a great start.
The Town of Esopus Library is located at 128 Canal Street in Port Ewen. For more information, call (845) 338-5580 or visit https://esopuslibrary.org. To learn more about the presenter, visit https://slowfamilyliving.com.
Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at ShopRite in Kingston
Lead poisoning wasn’t really on my radar until I had kids. I’ve had friends who have had to move due to lead levels in their homes, as well as endure long healing pathways for their children who were exposed.
On Thursday, July 18 from 10 to 11 a.m., ShopRite partners with the Ulster County Department of Health to present a Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. Not only is the event itself free and open to the public, but participants also go on a store tour and receive a free reusable grocery bag full of healthy produce.
ShopRite is located at 801 Miron Lane in Kingston. For more information or to register, call (845) 340-3047 or visit www.shoprite.com.
Learn to fish at Long Dock Park in Beacon
Did that recent announcement about a fisherman’s catch of a 200-year-old rockfish inspire you to take up fishing? Are you a beginner looking for a way to get started fishing? Then you’re in luck. On Thursday, July 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Scenic Hudson presents “Learn to Fish” at the Kayak Pavilion at Long Dock Park. All supplies will be provided, and Scenic Hudson educators will share about the ancient art of gyotaku: fish prints.

Three workshops for kids at Kingston Library
Library summer programs can be so wonderfully interesting and varied, such as the events that I’ve mentioned here in this week’s Kids’ Almanac. The Kingston Library has a wide array of events, including two highlights this week: first, the kickoff of the Kingston Teen Art Lab workshops on July 15 with “Worth a Thousand Words: Combining Image and Text” with Laura Hersh, followed by a second series starting on July 22: “Kingston Art Lab Museum” with Michael Asbill, whose artistic style I absolutely love. Registration forms are available at the Library or by e-mailing jessicaposer@gmail.com.
On Thursday, July 18 at 1 p.m., the Kingston Library presents “Native American Stories and Music” with Powhatan Swift Eagle. You may also recognize him from the local kindie band Fuzzy Lollipop. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
The Kingston Library is located at 55 Franklin Street in Kingston. To register or for more information, call (845) 331-0507 or visit www.kingstonlibrary.org.
