On two consecutive Saturdays, July 6 and 13, Actors & Writers (A & W) will present themed evenings of short plays, excerpts from longer plays and monologues at Maverick Concert Hall in Woodstock. The first program, on Saturday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m., is Noteworthy Shorts: The Music Plays. Directed by Nina Shengold, with music direction by Broadway veteran Mark Chmiel and Bobby Bray at the piano, the program features a rhythmic selection of short plays and monologues about music and the people who make it by Katherine Burger, Mikhail Horowitz (who’ll perform his piece accompanied by Sarah Plant on flute), Adam LeFevre, Laura Shaine, Nina Shengold and David Smilow, along with original songs by Jason Downs and Mary Gallagher and swinging, percussive poems by Billy Collins, Naomi Shihab Nye and more.
On Saturday, July 13 at 6:30 pm, A & W presents Emoteworthy Shorts: The Theatre Plays, a collection of provocative, poignant and comic short plays, scenes, sketches and monologues about actors and acting. Directed by Carol Morley, the program features works by two company members – Saturday Night Live emerita Denny Dillon and Tony Award-winner Mary Louise Wilson – alongside classic scenes by Chekhov, Shakespeare and keen-eyed observers of life in the theatre.
Admission for both events is by donation; $10 is suggested, but any amount will be gratefully accepted. The Maverick Concert Hall is located at 120 Maverick Road in Woodstock; visit www.maverickconcerts.org/index.html for details.
