Spurned Highway Sup seeks Dem support

Myer: looking to keep his job.

Saugerties Democratic Committee members could be forgiven if they were surprised to see a Republican in their midst at a June 25 meeting — and even more surprised that the party’s candidate search committee recommended him for a nomination.

That Republican was incumbent Highway Superintendent Doug Myer, fresh from a loss to contractor Ray Mayone at the Republican Caucus. According to party chair Mike Harkavy, the search committee decided Myer had the best credentials for the job.

That’s just a recommendation, though. The vote for the nomination will take place July 9 at 7 p.m. at the senior center.

The search committee also recommended Greg Helsmoortel for supervisor, Bruce Leighton and Marge Block for Town Board, and Lanny Walter for town justice.

The search committee also recommended cross-endorsing town clerk Lisa Stanley and receiver of taxes Suzi Filak.
