The Public Service Commission needs your input
Fortis, Inc., a Canadian multinational corporation, wants to takeover our public utility, Central Hudson. The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) will decide if this takeover is a net public benefit. The PSC has also left their public comment line opened until there is a decision.
Thank you for your comprehensive and continuing coverage including reporting by Lynn Woods, a top Hudson Valley investigative reporter, who has written about Fortis’s misdeeds in Belize in Central America and in British Columbia. Read her article to decide for yourself if Fortis is who we want in charge of our local utility.
Last week Central Hudson and Fortis issued a list of enhancements to make this deal even more attractive. The only thing that cannot be enhanced is Fortis as an untrustworthy corporate partner.
The most important action you can take now is tell the PSC you oppose this merger. Email your comments to Secretary@dps.ny.gov and be sure to include in the subject line “Case 12-M-0192” for the Central Hudson/Fortis Merger. Your comments will then become part of the official record that commissioners will review when making their decision on whether or not to approve this takeover. Include reasons for your opposition. Please do your part now.

Great fishing tourney
On behalf of the Saugerties Fish & Game Club I would like to extend a huge thank you to all those in the community who supported the second annual Saugerties Youth Fishing Tournament held on May 19. In spite of the soggy weather, close to 80 children and their families turned out to enjoy a day of fishing at the Blue Mountain reservoir.
Prize winners:
The smallest fish prize went to Kyle Sutton with a respectable 10 ¾ inch brown trout.
Thanks to the support of many area business and individuals we were able to stock the reservoir ahead of the event and provide prizes, souvenirs, food and water, all at no cost to the participants. Our event supporters were as follows: Benson Steel, Blue Mountain Snacks, Comfort Tech Heating & Cooling, Fleisher’s Meats, Gander Mountain, Glasco Abstract, Inc., H & H Environmental, Lezette Express, Lox of Bagels, Mowers and More, New World Home Cooking, NY Dollar, PC Smith Hardware, Price Chopper, Renos Auto Repair, Saugerties Lions Club, Saugerties Outfitters, Sawyer Savings Bank, Stella’s Station, Stone Pony Deli & Catering, Sue’s Restaurant, Thruway Sporting Goods and Ulster Savings Bank. A special thank you goes out to Mike Hopf and the village of Saugerties for opening the reservoir and making this event possible, and to the dedicated members of the Saugerties Fish and Game Club who stuck it out in the rain to make it a great day for the kids. I’m proud to be a member of a community that places so much emphasis on providing unique recreational opportunities for our young residents.

Prom success
There are so many wonderful educational lessons, activities and events that occur daily at Saugerties Junior-Senior High School. Our teachers do an outstanding job on a daily basis providing our children with the best educational lessons possible. We have both the pleasure and the honor to witness this every day.
Some of these activities and events occur outside of the “normal” school day and require the assistance of volunteers and businesses from our community. Recently our Junior Class Prom was held on Saturday, May 4 at the Hillside Manor in Kingston. Our thanks go out to Ms. Judy Hart, junior class advisor, who so successfully coordinated this event. Several teachers from the high school assisted by chaperoning this prom. Approximately 200 students and guests attended this event. There was not a single problem and everyone present had a really wonderful time.
The junior class post prom was held after the prom itself was completed. This was held at the Saugerties Bowlers Club in Barclay Heights. Approximately 150 students attended this event. Our P.T.S.A. parents worked together with owner, Rob Houtman, to provide his facility to our children to help keep them safe, and giving them such a fun place to be. Many thanks to all the parents and faculty who helped and chaperoned. A very special thanks to Rob Houtman for his kindness and generosity to our children.
The P.T.S.A. held a drawing for many prizes for juniors who stayed until the end of the party. We would like to thank the many businesses/individuals who donated time and/or materials in support of this event. These businesses/individuals include: Stewart’s, Sue’s Pizzas, Bambinos, Sun Zone, Greco Entertainment, Hannaford of Red Hook, Ms. Turner, Pizza Star, Village Pizza, and Slices. All students present had a great time with lots of food and all arrived home safe and sound.
We hope we haven’t inadvertently omitted anyone, and apologize if we have. Thanks to all for continuing to make Saugerties High School a great place to get a well rounded education.

Hyatt thanks supporters
I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to all of the voters who voted for me on May 21 as a “write in” candidate for the Saugerties Central School District, Board of Education.
There is an extra effort given by the voter who participates in voting for “write in” candidates and I sincerely appreciate the effort that was given. Democracy in action was witnessed in the wonderful community of Saugerties on May 21.
I will work diligently on behalf of the Saugerties Central School District and the citizens of Saugerties, and portions of the Towns of Ulster and Woodstock.
Thank you very much!

The tipping point
This Friday, June 7, the film Roadmap to Apartheid will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills in Kingston. The film fills a gap in the void created by U.S. media reports on racism in Israel directed against Palestinians. The documentary was made by filmmakers Ana Nogueira (a white South African) and Eron Davidson (an American Israeli) and juxtaposes scenes from South Africa under Apartheid with contemporary scenes in Israel and Palestine. Open discussion is vital to this issue and so I encourage members of our community to come to the screening this Friday. After the film, there will be a short panel presentation with a representative from Christian Peacemakers recently returned from volunteer work in the West Bank and members of the Vets for Peace delegation seeking funds to travel there.
