Tannersville Rubber Duck Race & Crazy Boat Race

Coming fresh off of the New Paltz Regatta, I’m all for rubber duck and crazy boat races – how about you? On Saturday, May 25, the fifth annual Tannersville Rubber Duck Race & Crazy Boat Race & Festival takes place in the Village of Tannersville from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five hundred rubber ducks are launched into Gooseberry Creek on Main Street at 11 a.m. The Crazy Boat Race happens at 2 p.m. For more information, call (518) 858-9094 or visit www.greatnortherncatskills.com.

Let’s Move Ulster 2013 Flash Mob in Kingston

If being in a dance flash mob is on your bucket list, set your computer on a course to www.youtube.com and search for “Let’s Move Ulster 2013 Flash Mob.” This year’s theme riffs off the original Harlem Shake. It’s all part of the third annual Let’s Move Ulster on Tuesday, May 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. on Broadway, between Cedar and Henry Streets in Kingston.

Let’s Move is free and open to the public, and in addition to dance, active play, games and demonstrations, the Midtown Farmers’ Market opens that day. As someone who (ahem) successfully completed Level 1 of Line Dancing through SUNY-Ulster’s continuing education program, repetitive group dances really appeal to me. Maybe I’ll see you there! For more information, call (845) 338-7664 or visit https://cce-kingston.org.

New Paltz Rod and Gun Club youth program Open House

Last year, markswoman Kim Rhode became the first American athlete to win five medals in an individual event in five consecutive Olympic Games. She began shooting when she was 10 years old. Do you have a future Olympian at home? Are you looking for a safe, educational opportunity for your youth to practice using firearms? On Sunday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the New Paltz Rod and Gun Club hosts an Open House for its summer youth program.

This weekly program is geared for young adults between 12 and 17 years of age and includes the Kids on Target 3 for 3 Archery Program and Three in the Red 22 Rimfire Rifle Program from Whitetails Unlimited, sponsored by Midway USA, as well as trap shooting. Participant youth will receive awards for their accomplishments. Completion of the NRA First Steps Rifle and Shotgun course is required to ensure a basic knowledge of firearm safety and operation. NRA-certified instructors and NRA-certified range safety officers will oversee all youth shooting events.

The youth program begins with the NRA First Steps Rifle and Shotgun class on June 1 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The regular program will then resume on June 15 and every Saturday thereafter from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., through August 24. The cost of the program is $25 per participant, and space is limited to 20 participants. The New Paltz Rod and Gun Club is located on Gun Club Road in New Paltz. For more information or to register, contact Tom Mihalics at youth@newpaltzrodandgun.org or (845) 256-8450.

Rosendale Theatre screens Studio Ghibli’s From up on Poppy Hill

It’s a three-day weekend, and that means awesome children’s programming at the Rosendale Theatre! This Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m., the film From up on Poppy Hill will be shown. I would tell you more about it, but here’s all you need to know: It’s from the creators of Spirited Away, Ponyo and The Secret World of Arrietty. See what I mean? My kids and I love those films!

The film is one hour and 31 minutes long, rated PG, and admission is $3.50. The Rosendale Theatre is located at 408 Main Street in Rosendale. For more information, call (845) 658-8989 or visit www.rosendaletheatre.org.

Elting Memorial Library benefit concert with Jay, Molly & more

I’ve already bought my tickets for this, so I feel fine about sharing this event with you, even though spreading the word may cause it to sell out: I’m covered! On Sunday, May 26, the Elting Memorial Library presents “Sing Out Loud,” a benefit concert for its children’s programs. I love this line-up: Jay Ungar and Molly Mason! Indie-roots duo Mike and Ruthy! Grammy-nominated Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower!

Tickets cost $50 for VIP seating, $20 for general seating for adults 15 years and older and $5 for children ages 5 through 14. If you can’t make it to the concert, the ticket link also makes it easy to donate a contribution. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. with music by the band Wind and Stone, and the benefit concert begins at 7 p.m.

Sing Out Loud takes place at the Studley Theatre in the Old Main Building at SUNY-New Paltz, located at 1 Hawk Drive in New Paltz. For tickets or more information, call (845) 255-5030 or visit https://eltingconcerts.eventbrite.com. To learn more about the musicians, visit https://jayandmolly.com, www.mikeandruthy.com and https://youaremyflower.org.

Summer concerts in Hyde Park, movies in Kingston

Speaking of music, here’s a link to check out, so you don’t miss the free community concerts being offered this summer in area parks and historic sites in Hyde Park: www.hydeparkny.us. And here’s the lineup for Kingston’s outdoor summer movie series: https://kingstonparksmovies.wordpress.com.
