Kingston Library host Coinology workshop this Saturday
I guess you could technically say that I collect coins, because I am mostly interested in just one type, and I stash them away in a special place for safekeeping. But really, I’m only talking about quarters that I find in the laundry, and I just like to keep them handy for parking meters and crane games.
If you or your kids or grandkids are looking for an introduction to coin collecting, head over to the Kingston Library this Saturday, January 19 at 2 p.m. for Grant Abrams’s presentation, “Coinology 101: How to Start Coin Collecting for Fun and Profit.” This workshop is free and open to all ages, and children aged 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
The Kingston Library is located at 55 Franklin Street in Kingston. For more information, call (845) 331-0507 or visit www.kingstonlibrary.org. To learn more about the presenter, visit www.grantabrams.com/coinology.

Teen Cabaret Gala in Woodstock this Saturday raises funds for Laotian orphanage
This is so awesome: dedicated local teens + fantastic fundraising events + a wonderful cause = One Voice for Laos: Teens for Change. These area teenagers are passionate about helping 600 children living 8,000 miles away at the Deak Kum Pa orphanage. Some actually traveled there last summer.
Since you and your family probably don’t have plans to visit Laos anytime soon, I have good news for you: You can make a difference right here, by attending one of the group’s fundraising events. I have more good news for you: The events are teen-friendly, as in your teen might actually enjoy them, possibly even with you!
This Saturday, January 19 at 8 p.m., One Voice for Laos: Teens for Change presents the Cabaret Gala, taking place at Photosensualis. Performers include the Vanaver Caravan, Uncle Rock, Marc Black, the Onteora Jazz Band and more. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for students. Photosensualis is located at 15 Rock City Road in Woodstock.

The Falcon brings Gustafer Yellowgold to Marlboro this Sunday
Not for nothing, but I’m just saying that if I go to the Falcon to hear some music, I don’t have to cook; my kids and I can order brunch during the Sunday show. Check out this lineup: a set of Gustafer Yellowgold performed on Sunday, January 20 by Morgan Taylor at 11 a.m., followed by singer/bassist Rachel Loshak, topped off with another set by Morgan Taylor! And this double-bill brunch is happening monthly through April!
Our kids love the cartoon character from the Sun, Gustafer Yellowgold. I wonder if it’s the playful way in which Gustafer views the world, or that the music is so much fun to listen to. Our family especially connects with the visual component: Animated illustrations drawn by Taylor accompany the songs that he sings. This performance is a terrific way to spend some time together, and it’s a lovely way to entertain visitors. Payment for the live music is by donation.
The Falcon is located at 1348 Route 9W in Marlboro. For more information, call (845) 236-7970 or visit www.liveatthefalcon.com. To learn more about the performers, visit https://gustaferyellowgold.com and www.rachelloshak.com.
