The New Riders of the Purple Sage are most famous for their connection to the Grateful Dead. When members of the Dead (including Garcia, Lesh and Hart) wanted to amble further down the country roads begun on Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty (two of their best collections of songs, if you’re asking me), New Riders was the vehicle that they chose. But, led by the emerging songwriting voices of John Dawson, David Nelson and Dave Torbert, the New Riders staked out a sound and an audience independent of their ties to the Dead.
Early members David Nelson and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage have the band riding again. 2012’s release 17 Pine Avenue finds the band in fine form. The New Riders of the Purple Sage visit the Bearsville Theater on Sunday, December 30. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8. Tickets cost $30 general admission, $40 for reserved balcony. Call (845) 679-4406 or visit https://bearsvilletheater.com for more information.
