Grace the Pirate in Rhinebeck this Saturday
I’ve dressed up as a pirate here and there over the years for Halloween, but I was not aware of any actual lady pirates until I learned about them at the awesome Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast Museum in Galveston, Texas this summer. I’m very excited to see that Grace the Pirate will be taking the stage at the Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck this weekend. Poet Penelope Allen wrote a poem about Grace O’Malley:
I now stand and demand every ear.
I’m here to make my claim crystal-clear.
O’Malley’s the great name I embrace.
Yo, mateys, I’m known as Pirate Grace.
Treat your families to some fascinating history through this interactive theater show, which includes Irish jigs, folktales and sea chanteys. Grace the Pirate takes place this Saturday, November 10 at 11 a.m. at the Center. Tickets cost $7 for children and $9 for adults and seniors. The Center for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck is located at 661 Route 308 in Rhinebeck. For tickets or more information, call (845) 876-3080 or visit www.centerforperformingarts.org. Once upon a Story this Monday at Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum
The Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum is pulling together some great authors, illustrators and their stories for your family this Monday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Once upon a Story: A Children’s Literary Event” is a day of celebrity storytimes with county executive Marcus Molinaro, Vassar College president Catharine Bond Hill and City of Poughkeepsie mayor John Tkazyik, as well as workshops, book-signings and more. How cool is it for your kids actually to meet David Soman and Jackie Davis Soman, the team behind the Ladybug Girl and Bingo book, and then have them sign a message in your copy?
Once upon a Story is a free program with museum admission, which costs $7.50 per person aged over 1 year. And remember, you can save one dollar by printing up the coupon on the Museum website. The Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum is located at 75 North Water Street in Poughkeepsie. For more information or to get your coupon, visit https://mhcm.org or call (845) 471-0589.
Paige in Full at the Bardavon
As an adult, I love the energy that exudes from people who tap into their own personal power by speaking their truth. To me, that’s what a role model does. If you’re looking for a strong, positive influence for your tween or teen, check out Paige in Full at the Bardavon this week. Paige Hernandez covers themes about growing up and being of mixed race, and her show includes dancing, monologues and poetry, all anchored in hip hop and performed to live music. She encourages young people to be themselves, even if they feel different; not to feel pressured to fit in or to conform; to find what they are interested in and to express themselves through that.
Paige in Full takes place on Tuesday, November 13 at 10 a.m. Tickets cost $10 each, $6 for Bardavon members and groups of ten or more. The Bardavon is located at 35 Market Street in Poughkeepsie. For tickets or more information, call (845) 473-5288, extension 106, or visit www.bardavon.org. To learn more about the performer, visit www.paigeinfull.com or www.paigehernandez.com.
