Regional Portfolio Day for wannabe Art majors this Friday in Hyde Park
You’re a smart parent. You know things. I hear that. But we can’t help our kids achieve their educational goals and career dreams by ourselves. If you have a budding artist in your family, here’s some real-life guidance that could be beneficial to both you and your resident O’Keefe: The Art Institute at Mill Street Loft presents its 11th annual Regional Portfolio Day on Friday, November 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. Representatives from more than 30 colleges will review portfolios and educational plans for interested students.
This event is free and open to the public, and takes place at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Museum and Library on Route 9 in Hyde Park. For more information on Regional Portfolio Day or other Mill Street Loft offerings, call (845) 471-7477 or visit www.millstreetloft.org.

Hike & interpretive program at Mohonk Preserve’s Van Leuven Cabin this Saturday
If you loved the PBS Frontier House reality series where three families lived the 1883 homesteading life as much as I did, mark your calendars for this upcoming Mohonk Preserve event. On Saturday, November 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Mohonk Preserve cultural historian Bob Larsen leads an easy two-mile hike to the last remaining cabin of the Trapps Mountain Hamlet and shares about life for local 19th-century homesteaders. The program itself is free and open to the public for ages 12 years and up, accompanied by an adult, but I’m assuming that you have to pay the day fee of $12 per person, unless you already have a Mohonk Preserve membership.
Meet at the Mohonk Preserve West Trapps trailhead on Route 44/55 in Gardiner. For more information, call (845) 255-0919 or visit https://mohonkpreserve.org.
Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville stages The Secret Garden this Saturday
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden was one of my favorite books when I was a child, and I can’t wait to share this story with my kids. Remember this passage? “At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, then they begin to hope it can be done, then they see it can be done – then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago.”
Thanks to the Shadowland Theatre Young Actors’ Academy, we can watch this enchanting story performed onstage on Saturday, November 10 at 3 and 7 p.m. I love Shadowland, and I’m excited to bring my kids there. It’s a comfortable mini-version of a grand theatre. Tickets for The Secret Garden cost $5. The Shadowland Theatre is located at 157 Canal Street in Ellenville. For tickets or more information, call (845) 647-5511 or visit www.shadowlandtheatre.org.
