“To preserve the tradition and the history of quiltmaking, as well as to foster awareness of and to be receptive to creative innovation in the art; to promote and sponsor interest and appreciation in all areas of quiltmaking among our members and the general public; and to promulgate friendship and the exchange of ideas.” That’s the avowed mission of those fabric-frenzied folks in the Wiltwyck Quilters’ Guild, and every fall they move it forward with an eye-dazzling exhibition called “Quilts in the Valley.”
This year’s Quilts in the Valley show takes place this weekend, October 6 and 7, at the Rondout Valley Middle School in Accord. Pitched at needle-pushers both experienced and novice, the show is a great way to find out about quilting and talk to quilters from all over the region. This year’s featured quilter will be Shirley Bernard, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday there will be a lecture by Cheryl Kosarek, author of Confessions of a Threadaholic.
But even if quiltmaking is the sort of craft that you’d prefer to leave to the experts, you can have a fun day just feasting your eyes on the colorful, intricately pieced and stitched quilts large and small that will be on display (and some, presumably, for sale). More than 200 quilts are slated to be on view this weekend, along with the Wiltwyck Quilters’ Guild Doll Exhibit 2012. There will also be door prizes, demos, a boutique, “Dream Baskets” and a Bed-Turning Exhibit.
Check out the slideshow on the Guild’s website at https://wiltwyckquilters.org for a taste of the amazing artistry of its members. As they like to say year-round in Winterfell, Game of Thrones’ bleak, glacier-bound northern territory, “Winter is coming.” Wouldn’t it be nice to insulate a chilly expanse of wall with one of these gorgeous fabric hangings right about now?
