Shout! The Mod Musical at Shadowland

Shout! The Mod Musical, which opened last week as the latest in Shadowland Theatre’s spectacular 2012 summer season, looks like it would be perfect for kids in its pop sensibilities – until one considers the innuendo involved, at least according to the Theatre’s artistic director, Brendan Burke. Set up in magazine/revue format designed to celebrate and explore the swinging ‘60s of Carnaby Street, Beatlemania and such classic hits as “To Sir with Love,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Downtown,” “Goldfinger” and many, many more, the work premiered on Broadway six years ago to mixed reviews, but has gone on to gain repertory life.

Part of its larger charm is the show’s infectious ability to hook into easy themes: The five girls who center the show – in their 20s and 30s, with one now in her 40s – go by color names and play up specific types. Beatlemania, Top of the Pops, Bond and Harold Wilson; the final years of the Commonwealth, the Kinks and the Stones, Mods and Rockers and a major shift in attitudes are all here, with bits of subplot and all that great music.

Performances of Shout! The Mod Musical will take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through September 9 at the Shadowland Theatre on Center Street in Ellenville. For info and reservations call (845) 647-5511 or visit www.shadowlandtheatre.com.
