What’s summer without the whirring sights and sounds of a carnie-heavy midway, the mingling smell of fried dough and animal barns, and the dissolving feeling of cotton candy on one’s tongue?
County fair season started this week down in Orange County, where the annual display of prized livestock and homemade baked goods, first run in 1841, will be on view through July 29. Entertainment for the two-week extravaganza will include an Elvis tribute artist, a Van Halen tribute band, Moto & Monster Truck Madness, along with a petting zoo, a Wild West frontier show and various 4-H competitions – and whatever happens, of course, after one gets spun on the midway.
It runs until midnight all days, starting at 12 noon on weekdays and 2 p.m. on the weekends; closed Mondays and Tuesdays. It takes place at the Orange County Fairgrounds, located at 239 Wisner Avenue in Middletown. You’ll hear it, and see the stream of cars, far in advance.
