Highland High to hold Love Out Loud scholarship benefit

Emily Carragher, a professional clown from the Big Apple Circus, will ‘clown around’ with partner Glen Heroy at the upcoming Love Out Loud Scholarship benefit event at Highland High School.

The Love Out Loud Scholarship Fund will hold its annual fundraising event on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Highland High School (HHS) Auditorium on Pancake Hollow Road in Highland. Tickets for the special entertainment benefit are $10.

“The scholarship is called Love Out Loud, and I’ve been giving it the last four years in my daughter Alicia Quintana’s memory,” explained Pattie Steffens, a retired Highland High School teacher, who also co-founded the Love in Bloom memory garden in the HHS atrium to honor her daughter and another friend, both killed in senseless automobile accidents. The scholarship is given to a graduating senior at HHS who has taken part in the high school music department and has a love and passion for music.“

Alicia was a music major in college,” said Steffens. “Every year I have sponsored a show with local entertainment and the members of the graduating class. The show closes with the premiere of the senior class DVD highlighting their school years in Highland.”

Two talented and entertaining circus clowns from New York City’s “Big Apple Circus,” Glen Heroy and Emily Carragher, will also make guest appearances at this year’s show. Both Heroy and Carragher have local roots, as graduates of New Paltz High School.

Interested donors can mail contributions to the Love Out Loud Scholarship, c/o Highland High School, 320 Pancake Hollow Road, Highland, NY 12528. Steffens also confers a similar scholarship at New Paltz High School each year. For further information, contact Steffens at 399-5108.
