Donald Fagen, Amy Helm, Happy Traum, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Don Byron, Kate Taylor, Jerry Marotta, Mike & Ruthy, Aaron Freeman, A. C. Newman, Zee Avi, Simi Stone, Doug Yoel and Connor Kennedy hit the stage for Woodstock Day School

If music is meant to be a melting pot, and Woodstock an especially flavorful one, the lineup for the 2012 Soundout Concert to benefit the Woodstock Day School is appropriately all over the map. Celebrating the music of Bob Dylan on the occasion of his 71st birthday (which is technically six days later, but why quibble?), the show boasts everyone from Happy Traum to Donald Fagen, Amy Helm, Aaron Freeman (a/k/a Gene Ween) to A. C. Newman of the New Pornographers, with all proceeds from the concert going to the Woodstock Day School’s Annual Fund, providing tuition assistance to families in need.

According to legend, the Woodstock Soundouts served as inspiration for the original Woodstock Festival. Begun in 1967, the Soundouts were electrifying rock festivals held in the great outdoors along Route 212 in Woodstock and Saugerties, including many on the grounds of what is now the Woodstock Day School. Performers at the initial Soundouts included Van Morrison, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Richie Havens, Procol Harum, Tim Hardin, Paul Butterfield and Happy & Artie Traum. Though the last of the original Soundouts took place in 1970, they were revived in 2008 to benefit the Woodstock Day School and have since included performances by Blondie and Laurie Anderson.

This year’s Soundout is incorporating the annual Woodstock Birthday Salute to Bob Dylan, a series organized in 2009 by Happy Traum and producer Lu Ann Bielawa, and will be held in the Bearsville Theater for the first time. “The Soundouts,” said Dr. James Handlin, Woodstock Day School’s head of school, “enrich the lives of our parents, students and school community, allowing us to be active participants in the legacy of Woodstock.”

The Woodstock Day School Soundout/Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration is scheduled for Friday, May 18, and as of presstime the roster included Happy Traum, Donald Fagen, Amy Helm, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Don Byron, Kate Taylor, Jerry Marotta, Mike & Ruthy, Aaron Freeman, A. C. Newman, Zee Avi, Simi Stone, Doug Yoel and Connor Kennedy. Tickets are available online at www.radiowoodstock.com or by phone at (845) 679-7600. Ticket prices are $40 for reserved seating and $20 general admission. Golden Circle tickets at $100 include reserved seating in the first eight rows and a pre-concert reception.
