Celebrating our younger citizens

As part of its ongoing bicentennial celebration, Saugerties will celebrate its younger citizens with Kids and Family Day at the Cantine Veterans’ Memorial Sports Complex this Saturday, September 10 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kids and Family Day is dedicated to Pete Seeger, Spook Handy and David Amram, and the day’s festivities will emphasize sustainable living, energy conservation, partnership, inspiration, education, health, safety and all things green. There will be music performances by Tom Chapin, Spook Handy, Mel and Vinnie, Uncle Rock, Ratboy Jr., Dan and the Rivertown Kids. A centerpiece of the festival will be the Sustainable Living Roadshow (SLR) from Oakland, California, presenting live music, keynote speakers, interactive workshops and more – all on solar- and bike-powered stages. Their “Conscious Carnival” will feature eco-art projects, a health and healing tent, sustainability workshops and speakers, puppet shows, natural building projects and more. SLR is “a caravan of educators and entertainers who tour the country in a fleet of renewable fuel vehicles to empower communities and individuals to use sustainable living strategies.

Visiting K-12 schools, university campuses and festivals across the US, the caravan sets up off-the-grid eco-carnivals with experiential learning villages, featuring workshops, speakers and interactive fun.” Visit their website atwww.sustainablelivingroadshow.org to find out more. The Town of Saugerties Emergency Services Association and other emergency services will also be on hand to demonstrate a variety of lifesaving techniques. Several local sports organizations, including the Little League, Babe Ruth, AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization), Youth Hockey, Skateboarding, Boundless Edge, the Sportsmen’s Club and the Saugerties Lacrosse Club – along with the New York Rangers Road Show – will offer sports-related activities and giveaways.

Non-profit organizations and businesses throughout the Hudson Valley will be part of the mix, providing games and activities. Admission to Kids and Family Day in Saugerties is free and open to all. For more information, contact Martina Merced, the Kids and Family Day chair, at (845) 532-1766 or log on to https://saugerties.ny.us/content/Generic/View/13.
