Letters to the editor, Aug. 18, 2011

After 20 years, if you look at that building with a critical eye, it was easy to see that things wear out. And the carpeting was the first thing to go. It was embarrassing.
Attempts were made to get the city to supply funds to replace this carpeting, but no one seemed interested in spending the money. Kate Cook, our tourism director, begged and pleaded, but no one in government listened. But Kate would not quit.
This month, Kate was successful. She found an anonymous soul with a generous heart who gave her the money.
And now the center has beautiful carpeting, recently installed. Great job, Kate! And God bless the donor.
John P. Heitzman

(Editor’s note: The writer is a former mayor of the city.)

Cahill loses vote
In the recent Freeman Republican candidate debate, Rich Cahill said that as mayor he would never wed a gay couple at City Hall. And in the same breath he also compared gays to lawbreakers, saying that he would never marry illegal aliens at City Hall either. Is this the face we want Kingston to show to the world? Is this the kind of leader we want in City Hall? Comments like this coming from our leaders is exactly what we don’t need if the bigotry and prejudices are going to end in this city. He has lost my vote.
