Bicentennial events

This year, the town of Saugerties celebrates the 200th anniversary of its incorporation. Some of the planned events are:

July 2: the Saugerties Farmers Market will be having a picnic honoring the old farm families in Saugerties, complete with corn on the cob. 1o a.m. to 2 p.m. at 115 Main St.

July 4: Annual Independence Day Parade, 11 a.m. The theme is Celebrating 200 Years of Community Service.

July 9: The Saugerties Art Tour will feature “Views of Saugerties” art show at the Kiersted House. A special exhibition by the tour to celebrate the 200th anniversary tour.  Reception will be from 5-7 p.m.

July 10: Sawyer Motors Car Show with chicken & rib BBQ dinners to be sold on the front lawn of the Kiersted House. This will benefit Old-Timers Day (see below). Tickets are available at both the town and village halls and Smith Hardware.

July 23: Town-wide Yard Sale. Residents throughout the town will have concurrent yard sales. To participate and get your address on the map, sign up at the village or town halls or at the Kiersted House.

July 30: Members of the 200th Anniversary Committee will be at Persen house in uptown Kingston to invite the public to learn about Saugerties.

Aug. 6: from 12-5 p.m. is Old-Timers Day, a street festival celebrating the rich heritage of Saugerties. The winners of the songwriting contest will be announced that day. Judges are Bob Lusk of Heritage Folk Music, Tony Mitzel of the Saugerties Community Band and Nelson Burhans of Catskill Glee Club. In an exciting new development, Old- Timers Day will feature bed races, in which teams of five will compete in decorous vehicles of slumber.

Aug. 6: “Hoe Down on the Hudson” from 7-9 p.m., a square dance at HITS. Tickets are $5 and will be available in July at Kiersted house and Town Hall.

Aug. 13 and 14: The Saugerties Artist Studio Tour.

Sept. 11: Kids & Family Day at Cantine Field. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sept. 25 and 26: Hudson Valley Garlic Festival. This year’s event will include Bicentennial-themed activities.

Oct. 1: Saugerties Chamber of Commerce Shine On Saugerties Gala & Auction at the Kiersted House, 6-9 p.m. An exhibit, “Traveling the Old Hudson River” will also open inside the house that night.

Oct. 2: Mum Festival, Seamon Park, noon to 5 p.m.
