Water Street Market has been showing free outdoor movies in its courtyard every summer Monday night for a decade now. The season is up and running already, with the last film slated for Monday, August 27. And this year, the third Saturday of each month will also bring an opportunity to view a free movie under the stars in New Paltz, at the Field of Dreams park pavilion, where the first of three Saturday night movie screenings this summer will be Saturday, June 16.

The New Paltz fireworks will be at the Ulster County Fairgrounds. In Highland, the firework festivities will be held at the Town Field, located behind the Methodist Church on the corner of Vineyard Avenue and Main Street. Both celebrations will have kid’s activities, concessions stands and more.
The annual New Paltz Memorial Day parade and services will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at 6 p.m. The
Treats incorporating bacon were back in force this year, along with a number of salty offerings, such as Cupcake Couture’s Chocolate Potato Chip and Salted Popcorn. Trending in 2018 as the hot cupcake ingredient: Nutella, combinations of which were to be found at several vendor booths. Can Marmite and Vegemite cupcakes be far behind?
One might not think that anyone brave enough to chance a dunk in the Wallkill River would worry much about getting wet in the rain. But a threatening sky might have been to blame for the fact that only seven teams ended up competing in the New Paltz Regatta last Sunday.
The Gateway Diner took First Place in the “people’s choice” Chili Contest at last Saturday’s Hudson Valley Rail Trail WinterFest. So if you voted for Pot #2 in the blind tasting, you helped make it a winner! Three Guys Pizza took Second Place, for the contents of Pot #1, and volunteers from the Hudson Valley Rail Trail Association (HVRTA) were in Third Place for Pot #11. There were 15 entries in all, in the centerpiece of the 20th annual WinterFest.
The sixth annual Christmas tree bonfire, scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 5 p.m., at Hasbrouck Park in New Paltz, has been postponed.
The parade itself is led by a proud horse, with a skeletal demeanor and a tall rider. The New Paltz Community Band has mastered its version of the “Addams Family” theme, and halfway down another band has joined in with the theme from “Ghostbusters.” As always, spectators join in to march and marchers peel off to seek sugary booty.
Overheard at Taste of New Paltz 2017, between two young girls: “I have sprinkles all over my shoe!” “I have hot sauce in my shoe.” That more or less sums up the particular genius of this annual event at the Ulster County Fairgrounds.
Now its 27th year, the event, which began as a food festival, is now much more.
