Andrew J. Bivona passed into eternal rest on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, age 87, at Woodland Pond in New Paltz. He was born July 5, 1930 in Newburgh, NY and was the son of the late Andrew J. and Rose MaccaroneBivona. He was married to Joan L. Craft in 1959 in Newburgh, NY. Joan predeceased him on September 11, 2013.
Andrew or “Big A” as he was known, was an amazing father, mentor to his children and their friends and a loving, caring husband to Joan. He became the family caretaker and always put the needs of others above his own. A true role model and a first-class gentleman of his day.
Andrew was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1954 – 1956. He was the co-owner of DeFalco Shoes in Poughkeepsie, NY, for many years until his retirement in 1990. Andy was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in New Paltz and had been an usher for many years. He was also a Republican Committeeman and was active in New Paltz baseball and softball associations.
He is survived by a daughter, Jody Mesches and her husband, Bruce, of Hudson, NY; two sons, Andrew C. Bivona and his wife, Stacey Byford, of New Paltz, NY and Christopher Bivona of Cary, NC; six grandchildren, Laura, Anna, Nicholas, Eli, Zack and Max; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Frank and Joseph Bivona; and two sisters, Mary Anderson and Nina Sladeski.
A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date at New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
