It’s the latest development in an ongoing rent control saga that has unfolded in Kingston over the past several years. A new organization aimed at unifying renters across the Hudson Valley held its launch event Wednesday at Academy Green Park in Kingston. The Hudson Valley Tenants Union is organizing renters to fight for better living conditions and tenant rights throughout the region.
The group is also pushing for passage of the REST Act, state legislation that would make it easier for municipalities to opt into rent stabilization. Under current state law, communities must conduct costly vacancy studies before enacting rent regulations. The REST Act would allow localities to rely instead on publicly available data such as eviction rates and housing cost burdens.
The union will hold its first general assembly on June 13 at noon at Kingston’s Old Dutch Church.
