A structure fire on Old Route 32 in Saugerties sent one person to Westchester Medical Center in critical condition Monday afternoon, drawing a second-alarm response and a medevac helicopter to the scene. Centerville Cedar Grove Fire District was dispatched at approximately 1:58 p.m. on Monday, May 18 to 199 Old Route 32, where the first-arriving unit reported heavy smoke and requested both a second alarm and a medical evacuation flight. The burn victim was treated at the scene by Diaz Ambulance and then airlifted by Lifenet helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.
Firefighters from Centerville, Glasco, Ulster Hose, and Mount Marion had the fire contained within approximately 20 minutes of arrival. Saxton Fire handled the landing zone for the medevac. While crews were still working the scene, Centerville Cedar Grove was simultaneously dispatched to an automatic alarm at Autocamp of the Catskills, which was determined to be an accidental activation. Standby coverage during the incident was provided by Malden West Camp Fire. All Centerville units were back in service and mutual aid was released by 5:30 p.m.
Additional assistance at the scene came from Saugerties Police Department, Saugerties Code Enforcement, Palenville Fire, and the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
