Shandaken’s Wittenberg Mountain is not a place one hopes to suffer an allergic reaction, but on April 27 this fate befell a hiker allergic to tree nuts.
The victim unknowingly consumed the allergen in trail mix and developed hives and swollen lips. A Pine Hill Fire Department member alerted a forest ranger of the emergency at 3 p.m. Rangers immediately deployed alongside a Shandaken Emergency Medical Technician to assist the stricken hiker.
Rangers reached the hiker on the trail at 5:15 p.m., by which time symptoms had already subsided. They escorted the hiker to the trailhead, where Shandaken EMS conducted an evaluation. The hiker declined further treatment.
