In the Midtown Kingston neighborhood, housing development is really heating up, with hundreds of units planned and under development. That trend may be coming to Furnace Street soon.
A developer is asking Kingston’s Planning Board to approve a new 12-unit apartment building at 73 Furnace Street in Midtown. Joseph Herzig, through his company 73 Furnace St. LLC, wants to tear down a deteriorated mixed-use structure on the site and replace it with a modern residential building. The project went before a public meeting at City Hall on April 20.
The proposal includes four ground-floor apartments designed to be wheelchair accessible. For parking, the developer plans to use existing on-street spaces on Furnace Street, along with an alleyway that could fit four vehicles and a handicap loading zone — though some title questions around the alley still need to be resolved. The building would also include at least 10% usable outdoor space and a landscaped setback along the street.
The project still needs final Planning Board approval and permits from the Building Department. If it clears both, Herzig hopes to finish construction by spring 2027.
