A Marlboro man was shot and killed Sunday evening after gunfire erupted across from a soccer field in Poughkeepsie, police said Monday. The victim was identified as Carl Chambers, 46. Officers responded at about 6:30 p.m. to reports of shots fired near Stitzel Field on Lincoln Avenue, where a crowd had gathered for a local adult soccer game.
Police said witnesses reported that multiple people exchanged gunfire across the street from the field. Chambers, who had been shot in the chest, was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and later died, police said. A second victim, a 31-year-old man, was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and was listed in stable condition, according to authorities.
Investigators said evidence indicates at least three different weapons were fired, including a high-powered rifle. No arrests have been announced, and police said the people directly involved in the shooting have not been located.
