Black bear sightings on the rise in Hudson Valley

The Ulster County Police Department recently took to social media to advise the public that they have received several reports of black bears appearing in residential neighborhoods. Complainants said the furry beasts are opening and rummaging through garbage cans and clawing at bird feeders.

Black bears are often drawn to human-provided food sources, especially when natural options are limited. Once they find easy access to food in residential areas, they may return repeatedly, increasing the risk of human-bear conflicts.

Of course, don’t feed the bears — not only is it illegal, but it can encourage aggressive behavior and reduce their natural fear of humans.

To dissuade bear visits, secure trash, remove bird feeders when bears are active, store pet food indoors, and keep grills clean and locked away. Maintain a safe distance from bears — difficult in the age of Instagram — properly store scented items, and protect pets and livestock.
