Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
There was singing, dancing, wonderful food, gifts, clothing and even a mariachi band at a block party on Kingston’s Cedar Street celebrating Hispanic Heritage last weekend. It was in conjunction with the Kingston Midtown Market held on Saturdays and sponsored by the Center for Creative Education.
Inaugural MyKingstonKids Halloween Fest & Parade
This year, in partnership with Rondout Savings Bank and YMCA Ulster, MyKingstonKids (MyKK) will present Kingston’s first MyKK Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 30 from 3 to 8 p.m. Lineup will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Kingston Plaza parking lot. The parade starts at 3 p.m. and continues down Broadway; it will end at the YMCA parking lot at 507 Broadway for the festival.
The event will include the MyKK dance party, children’s costume fashion show, vendor trick-or-treating, live entertainment, family games and activities, music, food and a live reenactment of the final scene from the Ghostbusters movie as a headlining performance.

Festival of Scarecrows in Kingston
The annual Festival of Scarecrows took place at Frog Alley Park in uptown Kingston on Saturday, October 16. The event was sponsored by the City of Kingston, Friends of Historic Kingston and the Junior League of Kingston. Artwork by students in K – fourth grade in the District were on display on clotheslines and an antique fire truck from the Kingston Firemen’s Museum was decorated with skeletons.
Seed Song Farm adds spooky activities Fall-Fun Weekends
Throughout the month of October, Seed Song Farm is hosting fall-inspired entertainment, and as Halloween approaches, the festivities get spookier. Bring the family to 160 Esopus Avenue in Kingston any Saturday or Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout October to join the fun. In addition to the weekend activities, entry is now open to Seed Song’s “alternative corn maze” and, beginning October 22, an eerie haunted trail with a local historic theme.
Included in the price of admission of fall-fun weekends, the newly opened maze is cut into sorghum Sudan grass, giving those who enter the chance to learn about the environmental benefits of cover crops. Within the maze, look out for the hidden clues that decode a secret message.
Based on the true story of the legendary Tinhorn Rebellion, the fright trail at Seed Song Farm is giving this historical tale a new spin. Trek through the woods, fields, barn and farmhouse to experience this revival of the 1840s uprising of Hudson Valley farmers, which contributed to the American democratic system we know today. The daylight track is for families and children and will be open from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the following Saturdays and Sundays: October 23, 24, 30 and 31. The after-dark track is for teens and adults and will be open on the following Fridays and Saturdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: October 22, 23, 29 and 30.

The Tinhorn Rebellion Fright Trail daytime track is $10 per person additional to the cost of admission to fall family fun events. The after-dark track is $15 per person. Refreshments will be for sale.
Seed Song Farm has been offering U-pick sunflowers, live music, hayrides, a haybale scramble, scavenger hunts, farm animal visits, games and farm-fresh food and refreshments all month during their Fall-Fun Weekends. Admission includes a bundle of small sunflowers or one small pumpkin. These activities plus the two latest additions will continue until October 31.
Kingston man charged for domestic violence
On Thursday, October 14, Saugerties Police responded to a reported domestic dispute on Glasco Turnpike. Upon the patrol’s arrival, the victim reported that the suspect was drinking and started arguing with her. During the argument, 36-year-old Stephen Smith of Kingston strangled the victim until she went unconscious. The victim’s child was present during the assault.
Smith was taken into custody and processed at Saugerties Police Headquarters on the charges of Strangulation in the Second Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Smith was arraigned in the Town of Saugerties Justice Court and then released on his own recognizance upon the court issuing an Order of Protection on behalf of the victim.
