Kingston High School girls’ lacrosse
The Kingston High School varsity girls’ lacrosse team closed out its regular season with a pair of wins last week, their 14-1 overall record securing them the top seed in the Section IX Class A tournament.Â
On Tuesday, June 1, the Tigers traveled to Guilderland for non-league action, winning 21-5 in their final tune-up for the playoffs. Arianna Burns poured in seven goals and an assist, and Juliona Montalto six in the lopsided victory. Also contributing to the offensive onslaught were Kailey Cook (3 goals, assist), Emily Schatzel (2 goals, 2 assists), Norah Prizzi (2 goals, 2 assists), Donatella DeCicco (goal, 3 assists) and Abigail Kresser (assist).Â
Julianne Louie and Kara Houston combined to save seven shots on goal in the win.Â
The Tigers returned home to Dietz Stadium to close out their regular slate with a 13-8 win over visiting opponent Minisink Valley. Prizzi paced Kingston with five goals and an assist, while Burns (2 goals, 2 assists), Montalto (goal, assist) and Schatzel (goal) also pitched in.Â
Louie and Houston combined for eight saves in the win.Â
The Tigers host the #4 seed Newburgh Free Academy in the sectional quarterfinals on Tuesday, June 8 at 4:30 p.m. (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One). The title game will be played two days later in the home of the top seed, with the winner of the Kingston-Newburgh battle taking on the winner of matchup between #2 Pine Bush and #3 Monroe-Woodbury.Â
Kingston High School baseball
The Kingston High School varsity baseball team dropped to 10-5 to close out the regular season with a tough 4-3 Senior Night loss to unbeaten Cornwall on Thursday, June 3.Â
Kingston led 3-1 after scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth, but the Dragons came back with three of their own in the top of the seventh. The Tigers had the tying run on second as the game ended.Â
Steven Freer had a solid five-inning outing, striking out five and allowing just one run. Evan Dieter, who relieved Freer and absorbed the loss, hit a pair of RBI singles in the game. The Tigers’ third and final run came with when James Huben was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.Â
The Dragons came back with two outs in the decisive seventh, compiling three hits and a walk. Patrick Purcell, who tied the game for Cornwall with an RBI double, scored the game winner on a wild pitch.Â
The Tigers are the third seed in the Section IX, Class AA tournament, opening at #2 Newburgh Free Academy on Wednesday, June 9. The winner of that game will head to Cantine Field in Saugerties on Saturday, June 12 to take on the winner of the quarterfinal between #1 seed Monroe-Woodbury and either #4 Valley Central or #5 Pine Bush.Â
Section 9 boys’ golf tournament
New Paltz High School’s Oliver Watson was the top local finisher in the Section 9 boys’ golf tournament held at Stony Ford Golf Course in Campbell Hall on Wednesday, June 2. Watson carded a 78 in the tournament, which was won by Mark Yan (1-under 71) of Newburgh Free Academy.Â
Other local finishers included Adam Grady (Onteora, 6th, 80), Ben Fox (Saugerties, 7th, 81), Micah Fox (Kingston, 8th, 83), Ori Grady (Onteora, 11th, 88), Loyal Goodermote (New Paltz, 12th, 89), Adam Williams (Onteora, 13th, 90) and Avery Burns (Onteora, 17th, 99).Â
Saugerties High School boys’ tennis
The Saugerties High School boys’ tennis team finished its 2021 spring season with an 8-3 record following a commanding 4-1 win over visiting Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent FDR on Wednesday, June 2.Â
The Sawyers swept singles play, with Mrinank Mitra (8-1), Sebastian Silipo (8-1) and Mitchell Hart (10-8) all prevailing.Â
The Sawyers’ Nikolas Rappoport and Jack Quinlan dropped first doubles 8-1 to Kiernan Wilder and Waheed Saroyia, while Sahil Sekhon and Sunny Tamang gave the home team a win by beating Taylor Bodo and James Iorio 8-6.Â
Saugerties High School softball
The Saugerties High School varsity softball team prepared for the playoffs last week by closing out the regular season with a pair of dominant wins over non-league opponent Chester Academy.Â
On Tuesday, June 1, the Sawyers hosted the Hambletonians at Cantine field, with Devin Fitzpatrick striking out nine and walking three in the 4-0 win. Fitzpatrick helped her own cause with a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning to set the tone. McKenna Alberts’ second double of the game drove in a run in the fourth, and also led to her crossing the plate to close out the scoring on a triple by Marena Graham. Christie Collins algo doubled for Saugerties.Â
Two days later the two teams were at it again in Chester, with the Sawyers coming away with a 9-1 victory. Among the 13 Saugerties hits were doubles by Alberts (single), Amber Banas (2 singles, RBI), Maddy Dodig, Fitzpatrick (2 singles, 2 RBI) and Marena Graham (single, 3RBI). Sammie Graham (2 singles, RBI) also contributed to the offense.Â
Lacey Schatzel earned the win on the mound with a five strikeout, seven hit, no walk outing.Â
The Sawyers opened the Section IX, Class A as the #3 seed against #6 seed Red Hook on Monday, June 7 after Hudson Valley One went to press. The winner of that game will head to Hyde Park on Wednesday, June 9 to take on #2 seed F.D.R. The title game is scheduled for Friday, June 11.Â
