Kingston girls’ lacrosse
The Kingston High School varsity girls’ lacrosse team opened its 2021 campaign with a pair of wins last week, playing their first set of games in two years.Â
The Tigers traveled to Slate Hill for the season opener on Tuesday, April 27, coming away with an 8-6 win against Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Minisink Valley. Arianna Burns led the charge for Kingston with four goals, with Juliona Montalto (2 goals), Norah Prizzi (2 goals), Donatella DeCicco (2 assists) and Emily Schatzel (assist) also contributing to the offense. Julianna Louie and Kara Houston split time in goal, combining to seven saves to preserve the win.Â
Burns, a junior, was electric again on Saturday, May 1 when the Tigers visited FDR in Hyde Park, scoring five goals and dishing a pair of assists in the 14-7 win. Prizzi (3 goals, 2 assists), Montalto (3 goals), DeCicco (2 goals), Schatzel (goal) and Abigail Kresser (assist) also pitched in. Louie recorded six saves for Kingston.Â
The Tigers returned to Dietz Stadium for their first home game of the season on Monday, May 3 (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One).Â
Kingston boys’ lacrosse
After its first week back in action in nearly two years, the Kingston High School varsity boys’ lacrosse team are 2-1, with one narrow win, a blowout victory, and a tough loss.Â
The season opened in Montgomery on Tuesday, April 27 when the Tigers outlasted Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association host Valley Central in a 10-9 nail-biter. Tyler Longo had half of Kingston’s goals in the win, with Owen Niles (3 goals, assist), Mason Delisio (goal) and Chad Keyser (goal) all contributing. Keyser’s overtime score off an assist by Niles proved to be the game winner for Kingston.Â
Two days later the Tigers hosted OCIAA opponent Washingtonville in the home opener at Dietz Stadium, winning 19-3. Longo (5 goals, 2 assists) and Keyser (5 goals, assist) led the way for the home side, with Trevor Loughlin (2 goals, 2 assists), Delisio (2 goals, assist), Hunter Meijas (2 goals), Niles (goal, assist), Brian Cotter (goal, assist), Jake Keller (goal) and Jack Chennault (assist) also getting in on the action. Griffin Klan saved two shots on goal for the Tigers.Â
The tables were turned on the Tigers two days later when OCIAA foe Cornwall doubled the home side up at Dietz in a 14-7 result. Four Dragons scored at least three goals against Kingston, led by Chris Rose’s four-goal, three-assist outing.Â
For the Tigers, Longo was again tops with four goals. Meijas (2 goals) and Keyser (goal) also connected for Kingston. Klan saved 12 shots in a busy Senior Day afternoon.Â
Kingston girls’ golf
After opening its 2021 season with a narrow home victory, the Kingston High School girls’ golf team dropped its next match on the road.Â
The Tigers hosted Middletown at Wiltwyck on Monday, April 26, winning 198-203, led in scoring by Lynea Giebelhaus’ 63. Christina Lettre (65) and Katherine Sevilla (70) also contributed to the winning score. Middletown’s top performance came from Adrianna Cortes, who carded a 67.Â
Two days later, Kingston fell to Monroe-Woodbury 169-202 at Monroe Golf Club. The trio of Giebelhaus (65), Lettre (66) and Sevilla (71) led the Tigers. Monroe’s Meghan Catherwood turned in a 53 against Kingston, with Jordyn Casserly and Leah Sheerin each carding a 58.Â
The Tigers’ next match will see Washingtonville come to Wiltwyck on Friday, May 7.Â
Kingston track
The Kingston High School track and field team dropped its first two meets of the 2021 season last week, falling to Middletown on Tuesday, April 27 and Monroe-Woodbury three days later.Â
Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Middletown swept the Tigers, winning 69-51 on the boys’ side and 82-33 on the girls’.Â
Luca Maneri (2:14.1) led the Kingston boys winning the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Peyton Lane (pole vault, 9.0) and Alcides Rojas (discus, 91-1) also turned in winning performances.Â
On the girls side, Ali Mitchell (2:26.8) won the 800 and joined Carla Bautista, Madelena Macaluso and Savannah Nimblette to win the 1600 (5:05.1) and 3200 (11:49.3) relays.Â
On Friday, the Crusaders crushed the Tigers, handily winning both the boys (116-20) and girls (117-15) meets.Â
Mitchell again won the 800 (2:32.1), adding the 1500 (5:04.4) for the Tigers, and combined with Bautista, Elli Meyers and Veronika Rakchev to win the 1600 relay (4:49.7).Â
For the boys, Myles Gordon (100, 11.5), Leyton Lane (pole vault, 9.0) and Joe Ciardi (triple jump, 41-6) all earned individual wins.Â

Kingston softball
The Kingston High School varsity softball team dropped its first two games under new head coach Carly Stanich last week, a pair of close contests that could have gone either way.Â
In the season opener, the Tigers headed to Newburgh to take on their Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association rival. The Goldbacks won the game 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off RBI single.Â
The Tigers were led by Rachel Hoyt’s three RBI, with Cadence Sickler (3 hits), Allisyn Kipp (2 hits) and Courtney Schwark (double).Â
Kingston hosted FDR on Friday, April 30, falling 14-12 in non-league action. McKenna Fairley (double, 4 RBI), Ava Guralnick (home run, 2 RBI), Schwark (3 hits) and Paige Bell (double) contributed to the tiger offense. Kipp, Margaret Habernig and Bell all saw pitching action in the loss to the Presidents.Â
The Tigers looked to right the ship on the road against OCIAA opponent Monroe-Woodbury on Monday, May 3 after Hudson Valley One went to print.Â
Kingston baseball
The Kingston High School varsity baseball team opened its 2021 season in commanding fashion, sweeping an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association doubleheader at Middletown on Saturday, May 1. Both games were called after the fifth inning courtesy the ten-run mercy rule.Â
The Tigers won the first game 12-0 and the second 10-0. Steven Freer struck out nine, walked four and allowed just a single hit over four innings of work in the first game; Evan Dieter also turned in a sterling showing in the second game. The Tiger defense turned in four double-plays over the doubleheader, including three in the second game.Â
In the first game, the Tigers led 5-0 after the first inning and 7-0 after the second. They opened the second game comparatively modestly, taking a 3-0 lead at the end of the second inning; but a combination of walks and errors in the fourth inning saw them tack on another six runs.Â
Jake Krantz, Jimmy McCardle, Auston Napoli, Freer, Jake Bonesteel, Dieter, Gavin Groppuso and James Huben all contributed to the Kingston hit parade over the course of the doubleheader.Â
Kingston looked to stay hot with a crossover visit to Warwick on Monday, May 3 after Hudson Valley One went to press. They play their home opener at Albert Gruner Field on Wednesday, May 5 when they host Pine Bush in crossover action.Â
Saugerties softball
It’s hard to imagine things going any better than they did for the Saugerties High School varsity softball team in the season opener on Wednesday, April 28. The Sawyers traveled to Spackenkill where they blasted their Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent 15-0.Â
Amber Banas had a stellar day at the plate, smashing a pair of home runs — including a fourth inning grand slam — and a single, and driving in eight runs. Devin Fitzpatrick excelled on the mound and at the plate, striking out five and allowing just one base runner by way of a fourth inning single in a complete game; she augmented her pitching performance with four hits and four RBI, including a two-run homer in the first. Maddy Dodig (triple, 2 RBI), Natalie Vail (3 hits) and Sammie Graham (3 hits) also contributed.Â
The Sawyers had their home opener at Cantine Field on Monday, May 3 when they hosted Wallkill in league action.Â
Saugerties track
The Saugerties High School track and field team split a meet on the road against Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Wallkill on Tuesday, April 27, with the girls winning 51-33 and the boys falling 64-60.Â
The Sawyers saw numerous first-place finishes on the girls’ side, including Renee Baldwin (400, 1:06.34), Made Marricco (800, 2:43.80), Marcella Candlin (1500, 5:30.60), Maddy Green (100HH, 20.43), Gabby DeSantis (400IH, 1:30.19) and Gilliam Lopez (shot put, 24-7). The Saugerties girls also won the 400 (1:06.54) and 1600 (4:58.99) relays.Â
On the boys’ side, Nino Tuccillo was tops, with first-place finishes in the 100 (19.95) and 400 1:15.04) hurdles. Dan MacIsaac (high jump, 6-5) and Joe Hartrum (shot put, 49.63) also took gold in individual events. The Sawyers’ 400-meter relay team placed first with a time of 49.63. Â
The Sawyers next host MHAL opponent New Paltz on Tuesday, May 11.Â
Onteora girls’ golf
The Onteora High School girls’ golf team dropped a close 174-183 match to league opponent Rondout Valley. The two teams faced off at Woodstock Golf Club on Wednesday, April 28.Â
Maxine Sprague earned medal honors for the Eagles with a 54, while Nicole Lane (64) and Luci Leonard (65) rounded out the scoring for the home team. Rondout was led by Alexandra Young and Madison Paddock, each of whom carded a 55.Â
The Eagles are back in action on Friday, May 7 when they travel to Red Hook.Â
New Paltz girls’ golf
The New Paltz High School girls’ golf team fell 185-188 to league opponent Rondout Valley on Friday, April 30, a match played at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston.Â
The Huguenots’ Aracely Watson carded a medal-winning 49 in the loss, which also saw Alyssa Puleo (66) and flora Pierson (73) factor into the scoring. Rondout was led by Alexandra Young’s 56.Â
New Paltz hits the road against league opponent Highland on Friday, May 7 when they travel to Apple Greens.Â
New Paltz boys’ golf
The New Paltz High School varsity boys’ golf team is 3-0 on the 2021 season after a dominant 181-206 win over Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Wallkill at Turtle Creek on Friday, April 30.Â
Oliver Watson led the Huguenots with a 5-over 40, with John Goodermote (43), Loyal Goodermote (46) and Frankie Natoli (52) rounding out the scoring. Carl Piperati-Foti led winless Wallkill with a 42.Â
The Huguenots hosted FDR in league action on Monday, May 3(too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One). On Wednesday, May 5 they head to Rip Van Winkle Golf Course for a league match against Saugerties.Â
Onteora boys’ golfÂ
The Onteora High School boys’ golf team crushed Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Ellenville 161-280 at Shawangunk Golf Club on Friday, April 30.Â
Adam Williams and Adam Grady medaled for the Eagles, each scoring a 5-over 39. Also contributing to Onteora’s stellar afternoon were Avery Burns (40) and Anthony Umhey (43). Koltin Picknell’s 48 was tops for Ellenville, but they were hurt by rough outings for Devon Burburan (70), Silas Millas (77) and Tyler Damms (85).Â
The Eagles have three straight matches at Woodstock Golf Club this week, hosting MHAL opponents Rhinebeck and Spackenkill on Tuesday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 5 respectively. Non-league opponent Wallkill rounds out the week for Onteora on Friday, May 7.Â
