The Town of New Paltz’s Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative is continuing to meet with representatives of stakeholder groups, according to spokesperson Esi Lewis, who reports back to elected officials monthly. They are now well into the inquiry phase of their work, which ultimately must result in a set of recommendations regarding changes to policing no later than April 1.
In December, meetings are planned with the Sisters of Sojourner Truth and members of the school district’s Racial Equity Committee, among others. Opportunities to speak with residents of Meadowbrook and Woodland Pond are “on the radar.” Lewis said that the collaborative members were reviewing the town law governing the police commission, as well as the concept of qualified immunity.
