Saugerties High has named its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2018. The two will be featured speakers at this year’s 122nd graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m.
Valedictorian Kira Podmayersky has a cumulative four-year average of 101.825, and will major in architecture at the University of Buffalo in autumn. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the school newspaper, the Yearbook Club, the Math Club Key Club and French Club. She has participated in Saugerties soccer, travel soccer, basketball and track and field. She is the daughter of Jason and Amanda Podmayersky.
Michael Averill, salutatorian, is undecided as to where he will attend college but plans to major in international relations and minor in Spanish and journalism. He has been accepted at Siena College, Monmouth University, The Catholic University of America, SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Binghamton; his academic average is 100.993. He is the president of the Key Club, the treasurer of the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, a reporter for the school newspaper and a teen leader for Saint Mary of the Snow Roman Catholic Church. He was selected in 2017 for Boys State of New York and volunteers to help an elderly woman from Puerto Rico who transitioned to life in the United States following the devastation of Hurricane Maria. He has served as the captain of the school’s baseball and soccer teams. He is the son of Thomas and Catherine Averill.
