Smorgasburg coming back to Kingston, but only one weekend a month

Smorgasburg Upstate wraps up season in Kingston this Saturday

Smorgasburg Upstate will return to the Hutton Brickyards for a second season in 2017, with the extension of the popular Brooklyn-based food and flea market shifting its focus from every Saturday to Saturdays and Sundays once per month between May and October.

In all, Smorgasburg has six weekends planned for their Kingston location, opening May 21-22 and wrapping the season on Oct. 21-22. Little is known about what other changes might be underway for Smorgasburg Upstate, though a brief press release announcing the dates promised “some of the Hudson Valley and upstate region’s most exciting chefs, food purveyors, and craft brewers alongside a curated selection of handmade design, vintage clothing and antiques.”

As with last year, the market will also include a handful of vendors who’ve made names for themselves at Brooklyn-based iterations of Smorgasburg, along with family-friendly music and activities for children.

Market co-founder Jonathan Butler couldn’t be reached this week, but prior to the final market of 2016 he spoke to the Kingston Times about what Smorgasburg Upstate learned from their opening season and how that would help inform their return in 2017.

“We’ve been really happy with how the first season has gone,” Butler said last October. “I think we’ve built a great group of core vendors and established the Hutton Brickyards as a destination in this first year … It’s been a pretty simple formula thus far,” Butler said. “Assemble some of the best food and beer in the Hudson Valley at a historic venue with unparalleled proximity to the Hudson River. There’s lots to work on during the off-season though.”

Last October, Butler said Smorgasburg Upstate would definitely return in 2017, and they’d do so with a deeper focus on how to make it a success in the Hudson Valley.

“In the coming months, our focus will be on expanding the range of attractions on market days as well as broadening our marketing reach in the region,” Butler said in October, “If there was one mistake we made this year it was taking our foot off the marketing gas after the overwhelming response on opening day. It’s clear that we need to do more to remain in people’s radar as a place to come on a weekly basis, especially in an area where there are so many one-off special events that are established and get lots of airtime.”

Smorgasburg Upstate’s 2017 dates are May 20-21, June 17-18, July 15-16, August 19-20, September 16-17, and October 21-22. All dates are Saturdays and Sundays.
