Pedestrian struck by vehicle in Saugerties ticketed for jaywalking

partition-main-sqA Wappingers Falls man who was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Partition St. ended up with a sore foot and a fine.

Kenny C. Wise, 56, was struck early yesterday afternoon by a 2015 Chevy driven by Kenneth Gierloff, 47, of Boiceville. Wise was struck by the sideview mirror, knocking him down, and his ankle and foot were injured by the vehicle’s tire. He was treated on the scene by the village fire department and DIAZ Ambulance, transported to HealthAlliance in Kingston, treated and released.

After investigating the incident, police determined Wise had attempted to cross the street outside the crosswalk, and he was issued a ticket.

Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra said the department’s willingness to write such tickets has led to a 50 percent decrease in motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians. Calls for new pedestrian signage and police action followed the death of a pedestrian in January 2014.
