Saugerties police warn of treasury phone scam

dollar-sqThe Saugerties Police Department is warning the public about a telephone scam. Local residents have reported receiving phone calls from a person claiming to be an agent with the U.S. Treasury Department. The caller advises the person that they owe money to the Treasury Department and attempts to elicit personal information. In most cases the caller provides a number for the person to call back if they receive no answer.

Police are warning residents not to provide any information. The US Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) do not conduct such inquires over the telephone.

Police are asking anyone who receives such a call to report it to the police department, 246-9800.
