Christopher Columbus: A courageous explorer whose arrival in the New World was the founding event of the European-influenced culture to which our nation is heir, or a genocidal slave-trader who initiated one of the greatest mass slaughters in known history?
With the passage of time, more communities are concluding it’s the latter. According to USA Today, this year alone, nine new cities voted to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples Day, including:Â Albuquerque, New Mexico; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Olympia, Washington. They join Seattle, Washington, Minneapolis, Minnesota, the state of South Dakota and city of Berkeley, California.
Here in Saugerties, it’s still Columbus Day, with schools, town and village halls closed.
