Kids’ Almanac (Feb. 21-28)

Rosendale Rec Center hosts Chili Bowl Fiesta

Looking for easy ways to infuse art in your family’s life? Like supporting local art studios? Love chili? Wish you could attend an event that encompasses all of the above? Then make plans to attend Women’s Studio Workshop’s 16th annual Chili Bowl Fiesta this Saturday, February 23.

Here’s how it works: You purchase a handmade bowl or tumbler; it gets filled with your choice of a variety of delicious chilis; and you keep the bowl after you’re done eating. But that’s not all: The Parents’ Choice and National Parenting Publications Awards-winning band Dog on Fleas is performing between 4 and 7 p.m., led by Grammy Award-winning producer Dean Jones. This is a popular event, so for the best bowl selection, I suggest arriving on the early side. Early admission costs $5 from 2 to 4 p.m.; admission is free from 4 to 7 p.m. Bowls are available in a wide variety of designs and price points.

The Chili Bowl Fiesta takes place at the Rosendale Recreation Center, located at 1055 Route 32 in Rosendale. For more information, call (845) 658-9133 or visit https://wsworkshop.org. To learn more about the musicians, visit www.dogonfleas.com.

David Gonzalez presents Aesop Bops at Two Boots in Red Hook

Storyteller, musician, poet, actor, writer and music therapist David Gonzalez’s shows include “street-style humor and kinetic storytelling with live music…mime, dance and above all, inspired imagination.” Bring the family and experience a fresh take on some classic fables about doing the right thing at his Aesop Bops show this Sunday, February 24 at 3 p.m. This show is free and open to the public of all ages.

Aesop Bops takes place at Two Boots, located at 4604 Route 9G in Red Hook. For more information or reservations for tables of six or more, call (845) 758-0010 or visit www.twoboots.com. To learn more about the performer, visit www.davidgonzalez.com.

Law Enforcement Day at the Galleria

Greek historian and Athenian general Thucydides is quoted as saying, “The bravest are surely those who are given no clear vision of what danger stands before them, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.” This weekend, bring your kids to meet some of our community’s bravest women and men at Law Enforcement Day.

Law Enforcement Day takes place on Sunday, February 24 at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Activities include child identification cards, a child safety seat installation demonstration, a demonstration of brave dogs on K9 teams, a SWAT team display, various police vehicles and more.

The Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall is located at 2001 South Road in Poughkeepsie. For more information, call (845) 485-3666 or visit www.townpolice.net.

Erica Chase-Salerno loves this quote from the movie We Bought a Zoo: “Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Twenty seconds of embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” She can be reached at kidsalmanac@ulsterpublishing.com.
